However did you know that you can apply to become a Provincial Council Member with FIC and that Provincial Council participation often leads to a seat on FIC’s Board of Directors? For Reference, three of current Board Members: Skye Kaiss, Jeff Ardron and Scott Wildeman began as Provincial Council Members.

Therefore if you are a club owner or own a stake in a fitness club and have a love of fitness and everything politics. You can apply today by sending a letter of interest and your resume to: Brian Gilbank, Executive Director for FIC. (All applications are reviewed and approved by FIC’s Board of Directors).

PURPOSE AND ROLE OF THE PROVINCIAL COUNCIL:

The Provincial Council was formed to promote and represent the Canadian commercial fitness industry within each Canadian province and territory, to provide external scanning of issues affecting our industry.

Key Roles of the Provincial Council:

A Provincial Council member’s primary obligation is to FIC’s members, Council Members also represent Fitness Industry Council of Canada’s first line of defense by providing their expertise on local issues facing the commercial fitness industry. Representatives from the Provincial Council are obligated to inform FIC of any issues which are not currently being tracked by FIC. Following this exchange of information FIC will provide correspondence and speaking notes to those Provincial Council Members who wish to speak on behalf of Fitness Industry Council of Canada either through the media or our government relations efforts.

Political Advocacy:

FIC has Provincial Council Members in all ten provinces, most members are club owners and operators who are interested in being actively involved in the political process in their home province and nationally. FIC usually conducts bi-monthly conference calls with all of our Provincial Council Members in order to update them regarding our policy initiatives and media campaigns.

Provincial Council Members are called upon by FIC to answer inquires from their local media and to participate in the political process such as attending and presenting at pre-budget hearings, policy negotiations and national media events. Provincial Council Members will also be provided access to relevant industry information and with the opportunity to network with industry leaders, which will provide Provincial Council Members with insight into current trends and future health policy initiatives.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Relay any provincial / federal correspondence affecting the fitness industry i.e. pre-budget, policy meeting announcements etc.
  • Advise FIC on potential opportunities to promote FIC and the Canadian fitness industry.
  • Staying abreast of any proposed policy, regulatory (legislative) reform in the respective province or territory.
  • Availability to be FIC’s local media contact or government representative in a specific province / territory.
  • Develop key working relationships with government representatives and politicians.
  • Council members are encouraged to attend two Annual Conferences, which are the Can-Fit-Pro conference held in August of each year in Toronto, Ontario and the IHRSA International Trade Show held in March of each year in the United States. Should a Provincial Council Member not be able to attend either conference, they will be required to be available for a conference call during both events.
